Summer 2

This half term we are focusing on:

As Summer term. Our reflections on our current learning tell us we need to focus on the following:

  • Improving the academic achievement in maths, for both children finding maths hard and those who work really efficiently in maths
  • Developing our music curriculum and wider music offer for children
  • Developing a play strategy for children and families
  • Applying the teaching and learning policy to all areas of the curriculum
  • Developing the application of SCERTS at Gainsborough to support children with communication and language needs

Gainsborough at the Hackney Music Festival- Parents in Class

We were thrilled to be able to share our singing with families on Friday. Reception, Years 1 and 2 and Years 3 4 5 all put on a fantastic performance. We are proud singers at Gainsborough and the children love to move and sing. Well done everyone!

Gainsborough Summer Fair

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s summer fair. We had a great range of food, activities and it was a great way to celebrate the end of term together. We hope you enjoyed it. If you are able to support the FRoG’s in setting up and running events like these please speak to Charlotte Harris. Thank you to all of the staff who gave their time to run events, you are wonderful. Well done Gainsborough!

Reader of the Week

Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Most Improved Writer of the Week

Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 as most improved writer of the week. The award is for those who have shown a significant improvement in handwriting or writing throughout the week.

Golds!

Each week we celebrate an amazing achievement from each class. Children are celebrated in assembly, receive a gold certificate and their name in the newsletter. Please celebrate their learning at home too!

Nursery Ducks

Amelia was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for trying really hard in carpet sessions and joining on. Well done Amelia!

Nursery Geese

Ismail was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for following routines in the classroom well. Well done Ismail!

Nursery Swans

Stella was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for being a great role model and helping others too, especially at tidy up time. Well done Stella!

Reception Magpies

Katie-Rose was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for learning the words to the songs in singing and doing an excellent performance. Well done Katie-Rose!

Year 1 Doves

Year 1 Doves class were awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for working so hard on their singing performance and learning all the words and actions to the songs. Well done Year 1!

Year 2

Ze’Jaune was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for his fantastic efforts in his assessments and his efforts in the singing performance. Well done Ze’Jaune!

Year 3 Owls

Amiyah was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for working so hard in all of her assessments and particularly in the maths assessments. Well done Amiyah!

Year 4 Hummingbirds

Zaniyah was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for writing a fantastic narrative using fronted adverbials and figurative langauge.. Well done Zaniyah!

Year 5 Hummingbirds

Rafael was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for working really hard and making excellent contributions in science. Well done Rafael!

Year 6 Skylarks

Treasure was awarded a Gainsborough Gold award this week for putting in huge effort to learn the words for the songs in the Year 6 play. Well done Traeasure!

Heatwave

This week is set to be hot again, but not has hot as the last heatwave! In the last heatwave we experienced temperatures of over 35 degrees over a sustained period of 5 days. At night the temperatures also remained over 25 degrees. This coming heatwave is set to be roughly 30 degrees with the temperatures cooling over night. However, we have taken additional measures to keep children cook:

  • mist bottles and water play will be available in all EYFS spaces
  • children are asked to come in a white t shirt and navy/ grey shorts
  • children are invited to wear sandals with backs on and a hat
  • we have bought face cloths to help children keep cool
  • we have doubled the fans in each room to circulate the air
  • we will reduce the demand on children in lessons if needed
  • we will provide more shade in the playgrounds

Sports Week

We have a range of Sports Days happening next week, all details have been sent to families in emails. Please check emails for further information.

Years 1 -5 Sports Day,  Thursday 9th July at The London Community Track, 1.30-3.30pm

Gainsborough Play Strategy

The children have fed back that they are enjoying the new additions to the playground and enjoy having a larger variety of different things to do at playtime. We are collecting loose parts play items to build further play opportunities for children at Gainsborough. The weekly donation suggestions last half term did not yield much for us to put into the playground. We have put together a half termly request and would like to ask families to all donate ONE item over the half term, just ONE! If everyone donates one unused item from their home we will build a really useful set of play resources. We have labelled 3 large boxes in the office area for families to drop in donations as and when they can. We are collecting buckets and spades and sand play, dressing up clothes (bags, hats, outfits, accessories) and utensils for sand and mud kitchen play.

Our Year 6 play told the story of Refugee Boy, based on a book written by Benjamin Zephaniah. We wrote our own words, created our own songs and told a deeply emotional story about belonging, change and resilience. The children displayed these qualities throughout rehearsals and the performance, and they were incredible to watch. We are sending them out into the world, braver, more determined and with confidence and pride. Well done Year 6! Well done Gainsborough.
