This week at Gainsborough…
Summer 1
This half term we are focusing on:
As Summer term. Our reflections on our current learning tell us we need to focus on the following:
- Improving the academic achievement in maths, for both children finding maths hard and those who work really efficiently in maths
- Developing our music curriculum and wider music offer for children
- Developing a play strategy for children and families
- Applying the teaching and learning policy to all areas of the curriculum
- Developing the application of SCERTS at Gainsborough to support children with communication and language needs
Gainsborough at the Hackney Schools Challenge
Children from Years 1 -6 took part in the School’s Challenge as part of the Hackney Half. We had over 50 families attending the race! Children met on the Marshes and ran as a group with school staff for 1 mile. They were given a runners t shirt and a winners medal at the final. We are very proud of our runners and incredibly proud of our staff members who organised and ran the race. A huge shout out to Coach Terry for supporting the children to come and for leading Gainsborough’s race.
Well done Year 6
This week our Year 6 children took their SATs tests, and they were incredible. They showed huge resilience, determination, grit and confidence. They worked diligently through all 6 tests presented to them and really did try their best.
The children have worked tremendously hard throughout their time in primary school and especially this year. SATs are simply a way to measure their learning in reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling (SPaG), and maths. They are not a measure of who they are as people. Our children are talented, creative, kind, funny, thoughtful and successful in so many different ways, and nothing can be better than being a good human being with your own unique talents!
Walk to School Week Homework
We are asking children to plan a family walk in your local area. We want children to be comfortable going for walks, seeing the enjoyment in doing so and walk for fun! Please support your child with completing their homework and taking them on their planned walking route. Thank you for your support.
Gainsborough Play Strategy
We are collecting dressing up clothes this week: costumes, hats, bags, scarves, traditional dress, jackets and coats. We are hoping to provide a rail for children to access dressing up clothes during lunchtime. We would also welcome 2 clothes rails!
TT Rockstars Battle
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to a TT Rockstars battle against James from Year 6. James has become very hard to beat in our TT Rockstars battles. This week James singlehandedly beat the children of Gainsborough and the staff, despite an attempt to fiddle the results by one eager staff member James still won. We are giving Gainsborough one last chance to beat James and then we will have to start to put sanctions in place for James, as he is just impossible to beat. Will anyone be able to beat James?
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Gainsborough Food Co-Op Opportunity
We will hold an introductory meeting on Wednesday 20th May at 3.30pm in the middle hall. Saul will lead this. It will be a chance to ask any questions, plan how the co op will run, where we might need volunteers, and agree on the best days so we can get started soon after. With the sunnier weather coming, it feels like a great time of year to begin and we want to make sure we start in a well organised way. In the meantime, if you know anyone else in the school community who might be interested, please do share the flyer on the school Instagram account.
Wear Stripes for World Bee Day
On Friday 22nd May we are inviting children to wear stripes for World Bee Day. World Bee Day serves as a vital reminder of why we need to protect these essential insects:
-
- Securing Our Food Supply: Bees are among the most effective pollinators on Earth. They are responsible for pollinating roughly one-third of the food we eat, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and coffee.
- Protecting Biodiversity: Nearly 90% of wild flowering plants depend entirely or partially on animal pollination. Without bees, the health and diversity of our natural ecosystems would rapidly collapse.
- Highlighting Environmental Threats: Bee populations are increasingly at risk due to human activities, including the use of pesticides, habitat loss, and climate change. The day highlights the urgent need to adopt pollinator-friendly farming and land-management practices.
- Economic Importance: The pollination services bees provide contribute billions of dollars to the global agricultural economy every year, supporting the livelihoods of up to 1 billion people
Parent’s in Class – TastEd
This half term we will be working with TastEd and Chef Rab to try a range of new foods! We would like to invite families from Years 1 -6 into class to work with us on Friday 22nd May 2.45-3.20pm to explore the next set of TastEd experiences and see how brave our adults are in trying new foods! All welcome.
Gainsborough’s Got Talent!
We have invited children from Years 1-6 to perform in Gainsborough’s version of Britain’s Got Talent. Children have been invited to audition in their classes, with 5 acts per year group being picked to go through to a school show. Families are invited to watch the show on Friday 22nd May from 3.30-5.30pm. We will have food and drinks on offer throughout the event and all money raised will go towards our play strategy, buying resources for play and lunchtime. Families will not be charged for the event but we will be asking for donations via our donation station! Please come along!
M2 Girls Running Club
We have partnered with M2 Girls Run Club. The club provides insight, training and support to get girls into running! Coach Terry will be working with girls across years 3 and 4 to train them for a run. They will be running at Hackney Marshes on 4th July.
