This week at Gainsborough…
Summer 1
This half term we are focusing on:
As Summer term. Our reflections on our current learning tell us we need to focus on the following:
- Improving the academic achievement in maths, for both children finding maths hard and those who work really efficiently in maths
- Developing our music curriculum and wider music offer for children
- Developing a play strategy for children and families
- Applying the teaching and learning policy to all areas of the curriculum
- Developing the application of SCERTS at Gainsborough to support children with communication and language needs
Gainsborough Keep Green- Can you do an electricity free day?
We have been thinking about how much electricity we use in a day. Children in Years 1 -6 have been asked to plan an electricity free day, swapping activities they do at the the weekend to activities that use less electricity? Please support the children to plan and execute their electricity free day!
M2 Girls Running Club
We have partnered with M2 Girls Run Club. The club provides insight, training and support to get girls into running! Coach Terry will be working with girls across years 3 and 4 to train them for a run. They will be running at Hackney Marshes on 4th July. For more information on M2 Girls Run Club please see m2club.org.uk
Gainsborough Play Strategy
We are collecting cardboard boxes again this week as children have enjoyed building so much at lunchtime. Please donate: boxes, masking tape, ribbons, brushes.
We are starting to collect dressing up clothes this week: costumes, hats, bags, scarves, traditional dress, jackets and coats. We are hoping to provide a rail for children to access dressing up clothes during lunchtime. We would also welcome 2 clothes rails!
TT Rockstars Battle
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to a TT Rockstars battle against James from Year 6. James has become very hard to beat in our TT Rockstars battles. This week James single handedly beat the children of Gainsborough and the staff, despite an attempt to fiddle the results by one eager staff member James still one. We are giving Gainsborough one last chance to beat James and then we will have to start to put sanctions in place for James, as he is just impossible to beat. Will anyone be able to beat James?

Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Coming up at Gainsborough…
Year 6 SAT’s
Next week, our Year 6 children will take their SATs tests, and we wanted to take this opportunity to say how incredibly proud we are of every single one of them.
The children have worked tremendously hard throughout their time in primary school and especially this year. SATs are simply a way to measure their learning in reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling (SPaG), and maths. They are not a measure of who they are as people. Our children are talented, creative, kind, funny, thoughtful and successful in so many different ways, and nothing can be better than being a goo human being with your own unique talents!
We would also like to remind families that Breakfast Club will be available each morning during SATs week from 8:00am. All children are welcome to attend free of charge. We strongly encourage everyone to come along so they can start the day calmly with friends, a good breakfast and a positive mindset before the tests begin.
The timetable for the week is as follows:
Monday
- Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG) Papers 1 & 2
Tuesday
- Reading Test
Wednesday
- Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic)
- Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)
Thursday
- Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)
This weekend and throughout next week, the most important things children can do are:
- Get plenty of rest and sleep
- Eat a good breakfast
- Relax and stay positive
- Believe in themselves
We want the children to see these tests as a chance to show off all the amazing learning they have done during their primary school years. They are ready, they are capable, and we know they will do their very best. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement at home — it truly makes a huge difference. Good luck, Year 6! We are all cheering you on and cannot wait to celebrate your achievements together.
Gainsborough is going to the Hackney Half!
Children from Years 1 -6 have been invited to take part in the School’s Challenge as part of the Hackney Half. We have over 50 families attending the race! Children will meet at Hackney Marshes at 10am on Saturday 16th March, and run as a group with school staff for 1 mile. They will be given a runners t shirt and a winners medal at the final. All welcome, please come along!
Gainsborough Food Co-Op Opportunity
We will hold an introductory meeting on Wednesday 20th May at 3.30pm in the middle hall. Saul will lead this. It will be a chance to ask any questions, plan how the co op will run, where we might need volunteers, and agree on the best days so we can get started soon after. With the sunnier weather coming, it feels like a great time of year to begin and we want to make sure we start in a well organised way. In the meantime, if you know anyone else in the school community who might be interested, please do share the flyer on the school Instagram account.
Parent’s in Class – TastEd
This half term we will be working with TastEd and Chef Rab to try a range of new foods! We would like to invite families from Years 1 -6 into class to work with us on Friday 22nd May 2.45-3.20pm to explore the next set of TastEd experiences and see how brave our adults are in trying new foods! All welcome.
Gainsborough’s Got Talent!
We have invited children from Years 1-6 to perform in Gainsborough’s version of Britain’s Got Talent. Children have been invited to audition in their classes, with 5 acts per year group being picked to go through to a school show. Families are invited to watch the show on Friday 22nd May from 3.30-5.30pm. We will have food and drinks on offer throughout the event and all money raised will go towards our play strategy, buying resources for play and lunchtime. Families will not be charged for the event but we will be asking for donations via our donation station! Please come along!
