This week at Gainsborough…
Spring 2
This half term we will be focusing on:
Improving school punctuality and attendance
Launching a school food initiative
Striving towards being a more sustainable organisation
Improving our academic outcomes for pupils at statutory checkpoints
Science Week
This week we completed our Spring term science units. We will use the learning from these units to display across the school, keep your eye out for the science enquiry we have completed this week on our class display boards. We have also focused on a female scientist, in line with international women’s day, and we have been blown away by the contributions of these scientists to the world we live in today. We have written songs about their key life experiences and there is a QR code on each display showcasing our performance of the songs, these have taken a little longer than we planned and we will perform and share these this week.

Thank you to all of our families who took part in parent’s evening on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Teachers enjoyed meeting families and showing off soe incredible writing, maths and history and geography work in books. It was lovely to have a range of our staff in the middle hall gathering feedback from families and showcasing our art and PE learning. Chef Rab also showcased some brownies and flap jack and talked to families about starting a food co-op at Gainsborough. Thank you for your contributions to the surveys we sent out. Please complete these by Friday Friday 20th March so we can analyse your feedback and make changes to support you and your children.

Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to a TT Rockstars battle against Ms Jethwa in week 2 and 3. A special mention must be made to James, Owen, Ismael, Lucinda and Mercy in week 2 and Owen, James, Simon, Jonathan, Owen and Princess in week 3, all were the school’s most valuable players. The children have decided to face Ms Lewis in this week’s battle. Will any of the children be able to beat Ms Lewis in this week’s battle?

Coming up at Gainsborough…
Year 4 Ice Skating trip to Lee Valley – Tuesday 17th March
We have been working with a charity called Hackney on Ice. Hackney on Ice are a small charity working with Gainsborough to get children into ice hockey. As part of this work they have arranged for children from Years 4 and 5 to attend an ice hockey sessions at Lee Valley on Tuesday 17th March. While the children are there they will also get a chance to meet 5 ice hockey players who will demo some skills a short match. The charity are small and are currently only working with Gainsborough to identify 10 children who they can support to start playing ice hockey. Watch this space for the next generation of ice hockey stars!
St Patrick’s Day – Tuesday 17th March
We will be wearing green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this Tuesday 17th March. St. Patrick’s Day originated as a 17th-century Catholic feast day (March 17) commemorating the death of Saint Patrick, the 5th-century patron saint who brought Christianity to Ireland. Originally a solemn religious holiday, it evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture and heritage. At Gainsborough we show solidarity with our Irish Traveler community and learn more about Irish culutre as part of St Patrick’s Day.
Red Nose Day – Friday 20th March
We will be wearing red for Red Nose Day! Please donate £1 and wear red on Friday 20th March. We have bought red face paint to ensure we all have red nose on Friday if children would like to join in. We have stopped buying the Comic Relief red noses for many reasons: they are too big for children’s noses and therefore they fall off in lessons all day, they are really just single use plastic that we don’t want to waste our precious planet resources on, they cost £3.50 (which is a lot if you have to buy a few), we sometimes buy too many which then is a waste, we sometimes buy too few which then causes a lot of tears. Face painting red noses means everyone is included and we we raise funds and awareness in a more sustainable, supportive and kid way. We will be collecting money on the gate in the morning and after school. Our kitchen team will also be preparing some extra special red nose day treats to raise money! Please bring cash to buy these at the end of the school day.
Eid – Thursday 19th or Friday 20th March
We would like to wish everyone a wonderful Eid celebration this week. Children who are celebrating Eid will be off school on either Thursday or Friday. We will be celebrating Eid on Monday 23rd March by decorating the hall together when everyone returns to school. We will have a range of traditional food, from a range of cultures that celebrate Eid, on offer on Monday.
Gainsborough Food Co-Op Opportunity
We would like to work with families to set up a food co-op. A food co-op is a group of people who commit to contributing some money to create buying power. The co-op members would contribute £5 a week, select particular foods, share the shop out weekly and ultimately go home with approximately £30 of food shopping from the co-op. Chef Rab has managed to secure over 15 families, through parents evening meetings, to join our first food co-op. If you would like to join please email admin@gainsborough.hackney.sch.uk stating you would like to join by Friday 20th March, and we will be in touch with further instructions.
