This week at Gainsborough…
Spring 2
This half term we will be focusing on:
Improving school punctuality and attendance
Launching a school food initiative
Striving towards being a more sustainable organisation
Improving our academic outcomes for pupils at statutory checkpoints
World Book Day
This week Gainsborough celebrated world book day in style! Children were invited to dress up as a character from a book and also spent time reading in classes, sharing our favourite stories. We also saw some wonderful staff costumes and some beings from OUT OF THIS WORLD made an appearance. This half term our home work will consist of children planning, writing and publishing a pop up book for at home, mirroring the learning they have done in school. The children really enjoyed making their pop up books in DT lessons and we are keen that they also get the opportunity to embed these skills at home.
DT Week
We have completed our DT units this week. We have made pop books using sliders, flip-flaps, pulleys and gears to create our pop pages. We have timed these units to combine celebrating world book day and will complete them, with our own stories and information, ready for Parents in Class on Friday 27th March.
TT Rockstars Battle
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to a TT Rockstars battle against Ms Clark in week 1. The children triumphed and beat Ms Clark, in possibly one of the greatest battles we have seen at Gainsborough. A special mentions must be made to Nellayna, Bridget and Jonathan who were the school’s most valuable players. The children have decided to face Ms Jethwa in this week’s battle. Will any of the children be able to beat Ms Jethwa in this week’s battle?
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Coming up at Gainsborough…
School Gardener Opportunity
We are looking for a school Gardener. We want an experienced food grower to help us run the raised bed poly tunnel, liaise with the kitchen team, and support us to look after our grounds. We have worked hard over the last 5 years to develop a greener space and we have built looking after our bug hotels, wormery, raised beds and Oasis outdoor classroom into our curriculum. However, we lack the expertise and time to make the best choices, order the right things at the right time, and maintain our food growing and planting. We need a self employed or contracted gardener, who is child friendly and an experienced food grower to join our team for one or two days a week. We are offering tours to those who are interested and would welcome expressions of interest to be emailed to finance@gainsborough.hackney.sch.uk by the 23rd March.
Science Week
Throughout the week beginning Monday 9th March we will be completing our Spring term science units. We will use the learning from these units to display across the school, we will be able to share this with families during Parent’s Evening. Each class has focused on a female scientist, in line with international women’s day, and we have been blown away by the contributions of these scientists to the world we live in today. We have written songs about their key life experiences and there is a QR code on each display showcasing our performance of the songs. Please come and see our science walls in the halls during parents evening this week.
