This week at Gainsborough…
Autumn 1
This academic year we will be focusing on:
Improving school punctuality and attendance
Launching a school food initiative
Striving towards being a more sustainable organisation
Improve our academic outcomes for pupils at statutory checkpoints.
Year 2 trip to Ridley Road Market
Year 2 have been learning about food from around the globe. They traveled to Ridley Road Market to buy a range of fruit to try back at school. They tried custard apples, pineapples, sugar cane and much more. They loved the different tastes and textures and were very brave when trying new food.
School Council meeting with the Kitchen Team
Our newly elected school council met with the new kitchen team. We discussed the current menu, voted for things we would love to keep and listened to suggestions from our chefs about possible changes. Over the next 2 weeks the kitchen team will trial new dishes in our lunch menu and by the end of term we will have voted for and decided on our new winter menu. We will continue to ensure we use as much home grown fruit, herbs and vegetables from our gardens and we will continue to gather feedback on the children’s likes and dislikes whilst also supporting them to broaden their taste and try new food.
Year 5 trip to the Docklands Museum
Year 5 traveled to the Docklands on Friday to learn about the history of the river Thames. They explored the workings of the docks, the rich history of the workings of the Thames and how the river has supported the city of London for centuries. Year 5 enjoyed the DLR and visiting the Canary Wharf area as well as the museum’s interactive exhibits.

Coming up at Gainsborough…
Family Friday’s in Early Years
At Gainsborough all families, of pupils in the early years, are invited into classes on a Friday morning. On Friday 26th September Swans and Reception Magpies restart family Friday’s. These sessions are designed to help support children and their families to have a shared understanding of learning, friendships, topics and the pupils interests in the classroom. It also supports families to provide similar learning opportunities at home as well. We start Swans and Reception family Friday’s in Autumn 1, with Geese and Ducklings starting in Autumn 2 when these children are more settled. We hope to see you in a Family Friday session in the near future.
Reception Application Process
All nursery children have been sent reception application information booklets from Hackney Council this week. These booklets contain important information about how to apply, when to apply and how to visit schools. Gainsborough will be offering tours and visits throughout the Autumn term. Families will be able to visit Gainsborough for a full site tour on Friday’s from 9-10am or from 5-6pm. To book a tour please email admin@gainsborough.hackney.sch.uk
Holidays During Term Time
If you took time off school for a holiday or to travel last academic year we will be inviting you in to discuss the impact of this.
Holiday’s during term time are not permitted in any school, and Gainsborough is the same. In our scheduled meeting we will discuss the holidays taken with families and consider ways they can manage this year without taking further time out of school.
We ask that all families strive to be at school everyday so that we can best meet the children’s well-being and academic needs.
