This week at Gainsborough…
Autumn 2
This academic year we will be focusing on:
Improving school punctuality and attendance
Launching a school food initiative
Striving towards being a more sustainable organisation
Improve our academic outcomes for pupils at statutory checkpoints
Year 6 at Hackney Chambers
Year 6 visited Hackney Chambers this wee. They learnt about the importance of voting, how the Mayor is elected and how the chamber works while in session. The children enjoyed meeting the Speaker of the House and trying on the Mayoral robes. Well done Year 6.
Children versus Staff x table Rockstars Battles
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to a TT Rockstars battle against Ms Lewis before half term. Ms Lewis was undefeated in her first week of TT Rockstars battles despite great scores! Will any of the children be able to beat Ms Lewis in this week’s timestable battle?
Year 5 at Kew Gardens
Year 5 took the overground all the way to the other end of it’s line to Kew this week. Despite train cancellations, and some rain, the children appreciated visiting a different biome for the day. They saw tropical plants and some wildlife, in an environment with very different attributes to that of Hackney Wick. This work supports the children’s learning in Geography and what conditions and life is like in the rain forest.
Odd Socks Day to Launch Anti-Bullying Week
We wore odd socks to raise awareness of differences between us! We are looking at anti-bullying week next week and the children will take part in a range of activities to unpick what bullying is, what to do if we experience bullying and how to prevent it. We are going to produce an anti-bullying guide for Gainsborough and we look forward to hearing and seeing the children’s ideas.
Gainsborough’s Low Carbon Banquet
This week Gainsborough took part in the final installation of the Low Carbon Chinatown banquet by artist Ling Tang, https://lowcarbon.lingql.com/Chinatown. Children from years 5 and 6 have taken part in planting, growing, harvesting, cooking and eating a banquet using resources grown locally. It was magical to see the children enjoy the Chinese banquet at Gainsborough this week. They tried dishes such as sweet and sour cauliflower, spicy tofu and aromatic chicken. The children made and prepared the pickled cucumber and tomato base for the dishes as part of the main banquet held on Friday at the Town Hall. We used our homegrown cucumbers and tomatoes to showcase the low carbon benefit of homegrown food. Year 6 also visited the exhibition which has been hosted at Hackney Services centre for the last month. They were amazed to see their hands, hear their voices and recognise the importance of growing our own. We hope being part of such incredible projects really inspires change and helps children to grow up acting on the climate actions we can take to become more carbon conscious.
A huge thank you to the Kelly Sullivan- Eco Schools team, Steph Li- Climate Manager at Hackney Council and Ling Tang- artist. We loved the project and we are laready thinking of ways we can imitate and host another banquet next year to build on this work.
