Welcome to the Children’s Centre at Gainsborough. Situated in a refurbished Victorian building to the front of the Gainsborough school site on Berkshire Road.
The centre will provide a range of services for young children, their families and carers. Run and managed by the school, it is open to all families regardless of where they live, although it is expected that most users will be from the Hackney Wick/Trowbridge communities. Attendance of a child at the school is not required.
The centre will be open week days throughout the year, and although it will not offer childcare (Clapton Park Children’s Centre is the nearest alternative) there will be a wide range of activities on offer.
The main focus of the centre is a wonderful large play room set up for babies and children aged 0-5 years, with direct access to outside play facilities too. Set up with a range of equipment, a story corner, imaginative play and a sensory room it will offer all children the best in play and development. Stay and play sessions, music and movement, art groups and crèches will all run from this room.
A toy library will also run from the centre – like a book library, only toys are loaned out for a fixed period of time. Your child need never be bored with their toy box again!
And whilst your child is in the specialist run crèche you can join one of the adult learning sessions on topics such as an introduction to the internet, supporting your child learning to read, parenting discussions and the like. You will have the chance to do some learning whilst your child is happily cared for in the crèche.
There is also a parent’s room – here the focus is on adults, providing them with somewhere for a quiet cup of tea, a chance to chat with friends or maybe search the internet for jobs or council services.
Alongside these facilities is a specialist consultation/medical room set up for ante and post natal checks, along with health visitor clinics, speech and language therapy and many other family health facilities. Use of this room will be appointment with the relevant health professional.
A community kitchen is central to the building and will offer snacks and drinks for users of the centre as well as cooking workshops for all family members. There are also laundry facilities should you need them.
The children’s centre is for the community, and will run the kind of activities that local families really want and need. If you have an idea of what you’d like to see or do, please let us know.
